Deputy speaker, 15 other Niger Assembly lawmakers fail to secure APC return tickets

The Deputy Speaker of the Niger State House of Assembly and the only female lawmaker in the Assembly, Mrs Affiniki Dauda, has failed to secure the All Progressives Congress (APC) ticket to return to the House in the 2027 elections. Her defeat came during the party primaries, where 15 other sitting lawmakers also lost their bids for re-election.

Mrs Dauda, who represents Gurara constituency, was defeated by a newcomer in the APC primary. Her loss came shortly after she seconded the motion moved by Senator Sani Musa endorsing Governor Muhammed Umaru Bago for a second term in office without opposition.

In contrast, the Speaker of the House, Alhaji Abdulmalik Sarkindaji, emerged unopposed from his Magama constituency, retaining the APC ticket without a contest.

The outcome of the primaries has also drawn attention for producing an all-male list of 27 APC candidates for the Niger State House of Assembly. None of the candidates on the party’s ticket is a Christian, a development already generating political discussion within the state.

Among those who secured APC tickets are Alhaji Abdulmalik Bala Yakubu for Katcha, Alhaji Abubakar Suleiman Gomna for Bosso, Alhaji Ahmed Mohammed for Edati, Alhaji Alhassan Isah for Mashegu, Alhaji Bello Bako for Rijau, Alhaji Murtala Adamu Badaru for Suleja, Alhaji Ndagi Zakari for Mokwa, Alhaji Nasir Umar for Paikoro, Alhaji Yahaya Abubakar Ahmadu for Gbako, Alhaji Zubair Ismaila for Rafi, and Alhaji Dogari Daje for Munya.

The chairman of the APC primary committee, Alhaji Danlami Mohammed Abubakar, announced the results at the party secretariat in Minna on Thursday evening.
