ASUU Warns FG Against Scrapping University Courses

The Academic Staff Union of Universities has warned the Federal Government against plans to scrap courses considered “irrelevant” in Nigerian universities.

The union, under its Bauchi Zone, issued the warning during a press briefing, insisting that every academic discipline plays an important role in national development.

ASUU said the move to abolish certain courses could negatively affect the country’s educational system and limit opportunities for students pursuing careers in various fields.

The union argued that no course should be regarded as irrelevant, stressing that different disciplines contribute uniquely to economic growth, innovation, culture, and societal advancement.

According to the lecturers’ union, decisions concerning academic programmes should involve extensive consultation with universities, education stakeholders, and professional bodies rather than unilateral government action.

ASUU also expressed concern that scrapping courses could lead to job losses among lecturers and reduce academic diversity within Nigerian universities.
The union urged the Federal Government to focus instead on improving funding, infrastructure, research, and the overall quality of tertiary education in the country.

It further called on authorities to adopt policies that strengthen universities and expand learning opportunities rather than narrowing them.
