Police Officers Now More Civil to Nigerians — AIG

Akure, Ondo State – September 14, 2025

The Assistant Inspector-General of Police, Zone 17, which covers Ondo and Ekiti States, Mr. Ajani Omolabi, has said that police officers are now more civil in their relationship with Nigerians as part of efforts to improve modern policing.
Omolabi, who disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria on Sunday in Akure, explained that the policy of civility had helped the police win the trust of citizens, making it easier to obtain useful information to combat crime.
“The police have become civil rather than being bossy. We now come to the level of the people, engage them, and understand one another. This approach has made information-sharing much easier,” he said.
The AIG said the zone had organised a series of seminars and lectures for officers on openness, transparency, and professionalism. He added that community engagement had been prioritised, with citizens encouraged to share intelligence directly with Divisional Police Officers (DPOs), Commissioners, or even the AIG himself.
Omolabi emphasised that the police were servants of the people, not distant authorities.
“I operate an open-door policy. Civilians have access to me, and my number has been circulated for complaints and grievances. We ensure that anyone who provides information is protected,” he stated.
On professionalism, the AIG noted that the police were encouraging personnel to further their education, particularly in law, to enhance the quality of investigations and prosecutions.
He also stressed that the Nigeria Police Force maintains zero tolerance for misconduct.
“We don’t spare our men. Those found guilty of indiscipline are disciplined accordingly, whether junior or senior officers. At the same time, we reward and promote those who perform their duties diligently,” he added.
Omolabi reaffirmed the police’s commitment to professionalism, community partnership, and improved service delivery across Ondo and Ekiti States.
