The protracted local government crisis in Osun State has taken a new turn as sacked chairmen of the All Progressives Congress (APC) have sued the Federal Government, the Inspector-General of Police, the Osun State Government, and others, demanding an extension of their tenure until 2028.
The APC executives, elected in October 2022, were removed by Governor Ademola Adeleke following a Federal High Court judgment that nullified their election. However, despite the legal tussles, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) conducted fresh local government elections on February 22, 2025, and its candidates were sworn in as council executives.
The development has sparked parallel claims of authority, with tensions deepening across councils. Local government workers under the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) have remained on strike, while federal allocations to the councils are still being withheld.
In a fresh suit filed at the Federal High Court, Osogbo (Suit No: FHC/OS/CS/147/2025), the sacked APC officials, through their counsel, are now pressing for the extension of their tenure beyond its original expiration date of October 2025.
