Suspended Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy, and the state House of Assembly may return to office on September 18, 2025, following President Bola Tinubu’s directive to the Sole Administrator, Vice Admiral Ibok Ibas (retd), to submit a full handover report of his six-month emergency rule.
Sources said the handover notes must detail inherited funds, revenues, expenditures, and projects executed during Ibas’ tenure. This order effectively ended attempts in the National Assembly to extend the emergency rule by three months to allow Ibas complete ongoing projects.
Former Governor and FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, reportedly opposed the extension and has insisted that democratic governance resume as scheduled. APC’s state chairman, Chief Tony Okocha, also reaffirmed September 18 as the restoration date.
Tinubu declared emergency rule in Rivers on March 18 to quell political tensions between Wike and Fubara. Observers note that lifting the suspension ahead of Tinubu’s planned UN trip would bolster his democratic credentials.
Fubara, currently in London, is expected to return soon to resume duties with a new list of political appointees.
