FIRS Mourns Four Staff Killed in Afriland Towers Fire

Lagos – September 17, 2025

The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) has confirmed the death of four staff members in Tuesday’s fire outbreak at Afriland Towers, Broad Street, Lagos Island.

The tragedy, which broke out on the sixth and seventh floors housing the Medium Tax Audit Office and the Onikan Emerging Tax Office, has plunged the FIRS community into mourning.

In a condolence message released on Wednesday, the agency said its security team had promptly alerted emergency responders, but thick smoke had already engulfed the building before the fire service arrived.

“The Management and staff of the Federal Inland Revenue Service are deeply saddened by the tragic loss of four of our colleagues,” FIRS stated, adding that it is in close contact with the bereaved families and will provide every necessary support.

The service also announced plans to strengthen safety protocols across all its offices nationwide to prevent a recurrence.

According to the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, nine people were rescued during the incident, five of whom were resuscitated, while others escaped unhurt.
