Court to Hear Nnamdi Kanu’s Motion for Transfer to National Hospital on Monday

Abuja, September 14, 2025 – The Federal High Court in Abuja will on Monday hear an application filed by Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), seeking his transfer to the National Hospital for urgent medical attention.
Justice Musa Liman, sitting as a vacation judge, had earlier granted permission for the matter to be listed during the court’s recess, citing the urgency of Kanu’s deteriorating health.
In the motion filed by his counsel, Chief Kanu Agabi (SAN), Kanu asked the court to order his transfer to the hospital following medical reports indicating issues with his pancreas, liver, and dangerously low potassium levels. The reports also noted the emergence of a lump under his armpit.
Agabi argued that the application was necessary because Kanu’s health had worsened while in custody of the Department of State Services (DSS), adding that doctors’ recommendations to move him for treatment had gone unanswered by the security agency.
“The applicant’s health is seriously deteriorating considering the nature of his confinement. There is a pressing need to afford him medical attention and forestall further decline,” Agabi stated.
In an affidavit deposed by Emmanuel Kanu, the IPOB leader’s younger brother, it was disclosed that a team of doctors led by Emeritus Professor Austin Agaji examined Kanu earlier this month and confirmed the medical concerns.
Kanu has been standing trial on terrorism-related charges before Justice James Omotosho, but his bail application filed earlier in May was not heard before the court proceeded on its annual vacation. His lawyers maintain that granting the medical transfer would not prejudice the case against him.
The motion will be heard on Monday, September 15, before the vacation court.
