Abuja – September 17, 2025
President Bola Tinubu has announced the end of the six-month state of emergency imposed on Rivers State, declaring that Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy Ngozi Nma Odu, and members of the State House of Assembly will return to office from Thursday, September 18, 2025.
Tinubu, in a statement from the Presidency on Wednesday, said the emergency was first proclaimed on March 18 to halt what he described as the “total paralysis of governance” triggered by the political conflict between the governor and 27 lawmakers loyal to Speaker Martins Amaewhule.
While acknowledging the over 40 lawsuits that challenged his action, Tinubu insisted the proclamation was constitutionally justified. He noted that the intervention had restored peace and stability, paving the way for a democratic return.
Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ekwe Ibas (retd.), who had been serving as Sole Administrator of the state, will hand over reins of government back to the elected officials.
The President urged governors and state assemblies across Nigeria to avoid destructive conflicts and prioritize harmony for effective governance.
