The Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has revealed a new policy that grants lifetime salary benefits to senior officers retiring from the rank of Deputy Controller, Comptroller, or Commandant-General and above.
According to Tunji-Ojo, the initiative—approved by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu—is designed to strengthen officer welfare and boost morale across the ministry’s agencies. The announcement was made on Thursday during the 2025 Ministerial Retreat, where the minister highlighted recent achievements and ongoing reforms within the sector.
A statement signed by DCF PO Abraham, Head of Corporate Services at the Federal Fire Service, confirmed the policy, noting that it reflects the government’s commitment to the welfare of officers. Tunji-Ojo expressed gratitude to President Tinubu for his support, stressing that the Renewed Hope Agenda is already yielding results across the Interior Ministry.
The minister further disclosed that over 50,000 officers have been promoted in the past two years, following the clearance of a backlog of pending promotions. Going forward, he said, career advancement would be tied to capacity and performance.
As part of broader institutional reforms, new training manuals have been introduced, and work is ongoing on a state-of-the-art Fire Academy designed to rival top global institutions, including the Arizona Fire Academy.
Tunji-Ojo also emphasized the importance of mental health support for officers and urged the Federal Fire Service to strengthen partnerships with the private sector. Such collaborations, he said, are key to improving infrastructure, service delivery, and the modernization of firefighting operations nationwide.
