According to the LP, there are growing fears that INEC is giving undue preference to states perceived as strongholds of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the ongoing voter registration exercise.
Interim National Publicity Secretary of the party, Tony Akeni, speaking in a telephone interview, alleged that “reports reaching us indicate frightening attempts to rig the 2027 elections before Election Day.”
He urged civil society, the media, and Nigerians at large to remain vigilant, stressing that irregularities in voter registration could taint the credibility of the process. “We don’t want a repeat of a flawed register where strange names like ‘the late Michael Jackson’ or ‘Mike Tyson’ appeared in the voters’ list,” Akeni said.
The LP also questioned INEC’s alleged plans to register inmates in correctional facilities while many law-abiding citizens are still struggling to exercise their constitutional rights to register, vote, and contest elections.
