The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced a four-day extension of the ongoing Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise across the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), citing high public turnout and the need to accommodate more eligible citizens.

The decision came after INEC’s Third Quarterly Meeting with Resident Electoral Commissioners in Abuja, where the Commission reviewed ongoing electoral activities and voter participation levels.

In a statement signed by Victoria Eta-Messi, Director of Voter Education and Publicity, the Commission said the ward-level registration—originally slated to end on Wednesday, October 8 will now continue until Sunday, October 12, 2025.

“Following the review, the Commission approved a four-day extension of the ongoing Ward-level CVR exercise in the FCT,” the statement read. “As of October 7, a total of 55,346 new voter registrations had been recorded, comprising 38,528 online pre-registrations and 16,818 completed physical registrations. This impressive turnout underscores the growing civic awareness among residents and the effectiveness of devolving the exercise to the grassroots.”

INEC emphasized that the online pre-registration option remains suspended in the FCT to ensure that all registrants complete the process physically at designated centres, in line with the Electoral Act 2022. The Commission warned against multiple registrations, describing it as a punishable offence under Nigerian law.

Eligible citizens who are yet to register, as well as voters seeking to transfer their registration within or into the FCT, have been urged to take advantage of the extended timeline. INEC also assured the public that the list and addresses of all registration centres remain available on its official website and social media platforms.

Meanwhile, preparations are already intensifying for the FCT Area Council elections scheduled for February 21, 2026. The electoral body recently published the final list of candidates, featuring contestants from 17 political parties vying for 68 positions — six chairmanship and 62 councillorship seats across Abuja Municipal, Bwari, Gwagwalada, Kuje, Kwali, and Abaji councils.

Campaign activities are underway, and INEC says it is committed to ensuring a credible, inclusive, and transparent process ahead of the 2026 polls.
