Tragedy struck on Friday night when a Dangote Cement truck crushed five persons to death at the Alapoka axis of the Papalanto–Ilaro Road, Yewa South Local Government Area of Ogun State.
According to reports from the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE), the crash occurred around 8:30 p.m. after the truck, with registration number GRZ 767 XA, reportedly lost its brakes and rammed into a tricycle conveying five passengers. All occupants of the tricycle died on the spot.
TRACE spokesperson, Babatunde Akinbiyi, confirmed the incident, adding that the Acting TRACE Head, Adedayo Omonayajo, and the Ilaro Divisional Commander, Salako Idowu, led the rescue operation. The team was said to have faced resistance from angry residents before the intervention of the Amotekun Corps restored order.
The remains of the victims have since been evacuated and deposited at a nearby morgue by officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC).
Friday’s tragedy adds to the growing list of fatal road crashes involving Dangote trucks across Nigeria. In several previous incidents, brake failure and poor vehicle maintenance have been repeatedly cited, prompting renewed calls for stricter regulation of heavy-duty trucks on the nation’s highways.
