The House of Representatives has reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding vulnerable Nigerians from the unintended effects of ongoing national reforms under the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Speaking at a retreat in Katsina State, Hon. Lukman Alani Mudashir, Member representing Ìwó/Ayedire/Ola-Oluwa Federal Constituency, stressed the importance of providing legislative backing and oversight for the federal government’s social intervention programme designed to cushion the impact of reforms on citizens.
“As government implements reform programmes to move the nation forward, unintended hardships may arise, especially for vulnerable Nigerians,” Hon. Mudashir said. “The NG-CARES initiative, with World Bank support, was created to address these special needs through existing social intervention platforms across states.”
The NG-CARES programme, implemented in partnership with state governments, is designed to provide immediate support to communities and households most affected by economic reforms. The House Committee on NG-CARES and CSDP has been tasked with ensuring strict oversight of the programme’s execution, while also identifying legislative interventions needed for sustainability.
Hon. Mudashir emphasized that collaboration between the executive and legislature remains key to strengthening Nigeria’s social protection framework. He noted that the retreat serves as “a unique opportunity to understand the framework of a homegrown social intervention programme, make critical inputs for effectiveness, and determine what parliament must do to ensure its success.”
The lawmaker expressed optimism that with robust oversight, innovations, and continuous legislative support, NG-CARES would deliver on its promise of protecting vulnerable Nigerians while advancing the Renewed Hope Agenda.
“At the end, we hope that all the desirable reforms of the Renewed Hope Agenda will be inclusive and carry along the vulnerable groups among us,” he concluded.
The event was attended by dignitaries including Katsina State Governor, Mallam Dikko Umaru Radda, PhD, CON, the Chairman of the House Committee on NG-CARES, Rt. Hon. Abubakar Yahaya Kusada, and the National Coordinator of NG-CARES, Dr. Abdulkarim Obaje.
